Why Cheap Shilajit Doesn't Work | What You're Actually Paying For
Real Himalayan shilajit takes hundreds of years to form, has to be harvested by hand at altitude, and needs careful low-temperature purification and full lab testing before it is safe to take every day. None of that is cheap. When a jar shows up online for the price of a pizza, the math does not work, and something in that chain has been skipped.
This guide walks through what actually goes into a low-cost jar, why it tends to deliver nothing, and what a fair price for real resin looks like.
Where the corners get cut
Sourcing is the first place. Real high-altitude resin comes from a small number of regions and is gathered slowly over a short summer window. Cheap brands skip the altitude and source from low-elevation deposits, or buy bulk material that has been stored for years and is already degraded. Some skip the resin entirely and use synthetic blends made from humic earth, food coloring, and inert carriers.
Purification is the second. Done properly, it is a slow, low-temperature water-extraction process that removes rock fragments, microbial load, and contaminants without damaging the active compounds. Done cheaply, it is a fast heat-extraction that strips out almost everything that makes the resin worth taking, then leaves behind whatever heavy metals and microbial residue were in the source material.
Lab testing is the third. A real third-party assay for fulvic acid content, heavy metals, and microbial counts costs hundreds of dollars per batch. A cheap brand either skips testing entirely or shows a single supplier-issued certificate that is not independently verified. Either way, you have no idea what is actually in the jar.
What's actually in a cheap jar
The most common cheap formulation is a small percentage of low-grade shilajit material stretched with a much larger volume of inert filler such as humic earth, ash, or maltodextrin. The result looks similar, smells vaguely earthy, and dissolves in water, but contains a fraction of the fulvic acid and trace minerals that make real resin work.
The second common formulation is fully synthetic, with no real shilajit in the jar at all. These products are usually a blend of humic acid extract, food-grade coloring, and a binder, designed to imitate the look and texture of resin. They produce no measurable effect because the active compounds simply are not present.
The third risk is contamination. Cheap source material from unregulated suppliers regularly tests above safe limits for lead, arsenic, and mercury. Without independent lab testing on the finished batch, there is no way to know whether a low-cost jar is safe to take daily, let alone effective.
Why you feel nothing
A daily dose of shilajit works through small amounts of fulvic acid, dibenzo-alpha-pyrones, and trace minerals delivered consistently over weeks. If the active material in the jar is diluted to a fraction of what it should be, the daily dose is also diluted. You can take it every morning for two months and feel exactly the same as you did before you started.
This is the most common complaint we hear from customers who have switched from cheap shilajit. They tried a jar from a low-cost brand, felt nothing, and assumed the entire category was overhyped. In almost every case, what they were taking was not real, well-tested resin in the first place.
What a fair price actually looks like
A real, well-tested resin from a credible producer generally sits in the seventy-five to one-fifty dollar range for a fifteen to thirty gram jar. That price covers high-altitude sourcing, low-temperature purification, third-party lab testing on the finished batch, dark glass packaging, and tracked shipping. None of those steps are optional if you want a product that works and is safe to take every day.
If a jar that size costs under thirty dollars, the producer has skipped at least one of those steps, and probably several. A low price is a useful early signal that the product is not what the label says it is.
How to upgrade without overpaying
Lead with the lab report. Brands that publish a current third-party assay showing fulvic acid percentage, heavy metals, and microbial counts are the ones worth the spend. The report itself does the work of separating real resin from the rest of the market.
Check the price per active gram, not the price per jar. A thirty gram jar of well-tested resin at ninety dollars works out to three dollars per gram of pure shilajit. A twenty dollar jar of the same size, even if real, would be cheaper per gram, but the testing and sourcing required to make that math work do not exist at that price point.
Buy from producers who explain their sourcing, name their testing lab, and answer questions directly. The brands that publish the most are the ones with the least to hide.
