What Is Fulvic Acid? The Most Important Marker in Shilajit
If you've shopped for shilajit, you've seen fulvic acid percentages thrown around as the main quality marker. They are useful, but they are also one of the most misunderstood numbers in the supplement world.
What fulvic acid is
Fulvic acid is a small organic molecule that forms during the slow decomposition of plant matter. It's part of a broader family called humic substances, which also includes humic acid. Fulvic acid is the smaller, more soluble cousin, which is why it's the focus of most supplement research.
The molecule's small size and unique structure let it bind to minerals and carry them across cell membranes. That property is the basis for most of the claims you see around shilajit and energy, mineral absorption, and antioxidant function.
What the percentage actually means
When a brand says their shilajit contains 75% or 80% fulvic acid, that number comes from a specific lab assay. Different labs use different methods, and some methods inflate the result by counting other humic substances along with true fulvic acid.
A reliable result will reference a recognized method, often one developed by the International Humic Substances Society or a similar body. If a brand can't tell you which method was used, the number is hard to compare against anyone else's.
Anything in the 50% to 80% range from a legitimate, well-tested resin is excellent. Numbers above 90% should be treated with skepticism unless backed by a credible lab report.
How to read a lab report
A useful lab report will show the testing lab's name, the method used, the date of the test, and the sample's batch identifier. It should also include heavy metals testing for at least lead, arsenic, mercury, and cadmium, along with microbial counts.
If a brand publishes only a single number without a full report, treat it as marketing rather than data. The full report is what tells you the product is safe to take every day.
