What Is Shilajit? A Complete Guide to the Himalayan Resin
Shilajit is one of the most talked-about supplements in the wellness space, and one of the most misunderstood. The short answer: it's a sticky, tar-like resin that seeps from cracks in high-altitude rock faces, formed over centuries from compressed plant matter and mineral runoff.
But that simple description hides a lot of complexity. Where it's sourced, how it's purified, and what's actually inside the jar varies wildly between brands. This guide walks you through what real shilajit looks like, what it contains, and why two products that look identical can be worlds apart in quality.
How shilajit forms
Shilajit forms slowly, over hundreds of years, in the cracks and crevices of mountain ranges between roughly 10,000 and 18,000 feet. The dominant theory is that it's a result of plant matter being compressed by rock and exposed to extreme temperature swings and microbial activity, gradually breaking down into a dense organic-mineral resin.
When summer temperatures rise, this resin softens and seeps out of the rock face in dark, sticky streaks. That seepage is harvested by hand, then carefully purified to remove rock fragments, dirt, and other contaminants before it ever reaches a jar.
What's actually inside
The two compounds people talk about most are fulvic acid and humic acid. Fulvic acid is the smaller molecule, easier for the body to absorb, and is associated with mineral transport, antioxidant activity, and cellular function. Real shilajit also contains a wide range of trace minerals, including iron, magnesium, zinc, and selenium, alongside dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and other organic compounds that researchers are still working to fully understand.
A high fulvic acid percentage is a useful marker, but it's not the only one. The presence of contaminants like heavy metals, microbial counts, and the level of inert filler material all matter just as much. A product that lists 80%+ fulvic acid but ships with elevated lead is not a high-quality product.
How to tell real from fake
The resin should be dark brown to black, soft and pliable at room temperature, and should harden in the fridge. It dissolves fully in warm water with no chunks, sediment, or oily film on top. The smell is earthy and slightly bitter. The taste is similar.
If the product is rock hard at room temperature, sandy, oily, or refuses to dissolve, that's a flag. If the brand can't or won't share independent third-party lab results showing fulvic acid content and heavy metals testing, that's a bigger flag.
Resin vs powders and capsules
Resin is the most concentrated, most bioavailable form. Powders are typically made by spray-drying resin onto a carrier substance, which dilutes potency and adds processing steps where contamination or degradation can occur. Capsules add another layer, often with binders and flow agents that the body has to break down before any of the active compounds become available.
If you're paying a premium for shilajit, the form matters. Resin gives you the most active material per gram and the cleanest experience.
