What Is Thymoquinone? The Active Compound in Black Seed Oil

If you have shopped for black seed oil, you have probably seen the word thymoquinone on the label. It is the marker brands use to demonstrate quality, and the reason cold-pressed oil from a serious producer can sit on the shelf next to a much cheaper bottle and look like a different product. Here is what the molecule actually is, and what those numbers on the label mean.

What thymoquinone is

Thymoquinone is a small organic compound found in the volatile oil fraction of Nigella Sativa seeds. It belongs to a family of molecules called quinones, which are involved in a wide range of biological processes including antioxidant activity and cellular signaling.

It is the most studied compound in black seed oil by a significant margin. Hundreds of papers in the last decade have looked at its role in immune function, metabolic markers, and oxidative stress. The research is still building, but thymoquinone is the reason the broader category gets so much attention.

What the percentage means

Thymoquinone content is measured as a percentage of the finished oil by mass. A typical refined or heat-extracted oil sits between 0.3% and 1.0%. A standard cold-pressed bottle from a quality producer lands between 1.5% and 3.0%. A bottle north of 4.0% is genuinely high-end, and depends on careful seed selection, low-temperature pressing, and minimal exposure to light and air during bottling.

Brands sometimes quote percentages from the seeds themselves rather than the finished oil. Those numbers can look impressive but mean nothing to the dose you actually take. Always check whether the lab assay is on the bottled product, not the raw seed.

How labs measure it

Thymoquinone is most commonly measured using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC), both of which give a precise reading on the finished oil. A reliable lab report will name the method, the testing lab, the batch identifier, and the date of the assay.

If a brand claims a thymoquinone percentage but cannot produce a third-party lab report on the bottled product, the number is marketing rather than data. The difference matters: a half-percent versus a five-percent oil is a tenfold difference in the dose you get per teaspoon.

What to look for on a label

Cold-pressed and unrefined as the extraction method. Single-origin seeds from a named region. Amber or dark glass packaging. A published thymoquinone percentage tied to a specific batch. And a recent press date, since cold-pressed oils lose potency over time.

Anything missing from that list is a sign to keep looking. Anything present is a sign that the producer takes the bottle as seriously as you do.
